Acoustic Wave Therapy

At Prime Medical Solutions we use Acoustic Wave Therapy (also called shock wave therapy) to initiate microtrauma in the blood vessels of the treated area.  This triggers the body to heal the area better and stronger than it was prior to treatment.  By utilizing the body’s natural healing mechanisms, we can reverse vasular damage that has accumulaed throughtout the course of a patient’s life.  

This technology first became of clinical use in the early 1980s.  Also called Extracorporeal shockwave therapy, it’s first use was to break up kidney stones.  Using an acoustic pulse kindey stones can be pulverized in a non-invasive procedure.  While performing this procedure it was observed that bone denisty increased in nearby bones.  This led to the relaization that Acoustic Wave therapy could used to promote angiogenesis (blood vessel healing and growth), osteogenesis (bone healng and growth), and tendogenesis (tendon healing and growth).

By treating blood vessels with acoustic pulses we can improve a patient’s blood flow and vascular performance in whatever area of the body we decide to target.  This process triggers neovascularization, also know as angiogenesis.  This means the formation of new blood vessels.  This same process occurs when we damage muslces during exercise.  The large veins that you see in a body builder’s arms were not there before he began training.  The growth of these blood vessels was a response to the training.  By putting stress on the body we can enourage the body to improve blood flow and grow new blood vessels.  Acoustic Wave Therpy allows us to treat areas of the body that are impossible to target with exercise alone. 

While exercise can trigger neovasularization in areas where we have muscles, sometimes we need to imporve blood flow in places that are not where muscle tissue exists. These areas are where Acoustic Wave Therapy is most applicable.  If there are muscles we can take advantage of ordinary exercise and physical therapy to improve blood floow.  But in the case of some joints and ligaments this is not possible.  Both tennis elbow and planta fasciitis are well treated with Acoustic Wave Therapy.  The other prime target as this technology are the blood vessels of the penis and surrounding areas.  Using Acoustic Wave Therapy to treat the blood flow in the penis has been dubbed GAINSWave.  Named after Dr. Richard Gains, this treatment can both fix vascular causes of erectile dysfunction as well as improve the sexual performance of all men.
